And the Whisper of Wind in the Wattle
by Caitlyn Payne
Burpengary State School, Qld

Fluffy cotton balls on silver wings
Drifting peacefully through the periwinkle sky;
The breeze playing tug with my hair,
The sweet, gentle song
Of a proud young dove,
And the whisper of wind in the wattle.

The abandoned tin hut -
Its sad lonely moan;
The howl of a lonesome dingo,
The sudden piercing laugh
Of a cheerful kookaburra,
And the whisper of wind in the wattle.

The tireless honey bees-
Their soft sleepy hum;
The wild, ruthless song of the crickets,
The loud, sharp call
Of a parrot to its mate;
And the whisper of wind in the wattle.

Tsunami, lost at sea
by Paige Garretty
Leichhardt, Qld

So many lost their lives at sea,
Leaving family and friends sad to be.
An upsetting time for them to lose
Such wonderful people and hearing terrible news.
The heavens above where people fly,
Victims of destruction soar up high.
Living such pain for those who survive,
Are thinking of the lost and wish for them to be alive.
Some were lucky but some weren't at all,
With that unexpected wave that arrived so big & tall.
The wave was monstrous, scary and quick too,
Soon towns were demolished, even the new.
Cities turned into wrecks with nowhere to stand,
Luckily volunteers are helping by giving a hand.
A tumbling, crashing wave came to shore,
Making others believe that there is still more.
The workers will search from the sky to the ground,
Waiting for many more people to be found.
Hope is needed for ones in trouble these days,
To save these innocents lives, we can help with ways.
May all the poor survivors be able to adore,
A life of fun, dreams and much, much more.

Paraplegic
by Bradley Michelmore
West Moreton Anglican College, Ipswich, Qld

A paraplegic is sitting near me,
Being so helpless.
I would help him but I’m scared.
He might get angry with me.
He starts writing with his mouth,
And all my guilt started building up.
So I asked him.
“Do you need any help?”
He replied “NO I DON’T NEED YOUR HELP!!!
I DON’T NEED YOU!!!
I NEED NO ONE .”
From now on, whenever I see superman,
I hide under the couch...
