When
by Megan Weir
St. Mary’s College, Ipswich, Qld
When I walk down the street you give me the evil eye,
When
I sit on the bench I make white children cry,
When I sit on the beach I get
asked how long I’ve
been here,
When I get on the bus I am forced to the rear,
So all I am asking is for
you to look inside,
Look under my skin and you will see we are the same you
and I
The Sounds of the Outback
by Emma Santin
Forest Lake, Qld
There’s no car, loudly beeping its horn,
Just the rustling
of wind through paddocks of corn.
There’s no blaring music in the air
Just cicadas humming everywhere.
There’s no sound of trucks rattling
past,
Just the burbling stream, flowing fast.
There’s no noise from building
sites,
Just the quietness of the dark, dark nights.
There’s no loudly tramping,
stamping feet,
Just a bird’s sweet song or lovely tweet.
There’s none of the
awful sounds I hate,
Just a squeak, as the farmer shuts his gate.
