A Yellow Envy by Brenda Tan (Highly Commended)

Hazel eyes run wild with glimmering emeralds galloping at dusk
A black sky home beneath her lash-line
Thick and wispy curls heavy on her lids.
Her freckles spotted like specs of dust,
Refined like her intellect.
She is a polymath
musician
orator
sportswoman
a leader.
She is
Bullseye –
A melting pot of diversity,
Of the West and the East,
Of mixes and halves; the best of both worlds.
My brown eyes watch insecure,
But tender –
In admiration, with love
Like how I cherish boiled eggs;
A hard exterior shell encases her soft smile,
her sweet heart: the yolk.
