Rough Country by David Gagen (First Prize)

The day he died
The air was cold
A frost on Burnett soil,
The doctor next door,
Breakfasting before God’s light
Dawning,
A Ramadan winter.
He heaves a raspy breath
From the chair
In the corner,
Blanketed with tired eyes
Soul astir.
A magpie calls his name
From some high branch,
From scrub
That holds forgotten years,
And he is away,
Riding hours
Over that rough country,
To Alchuringa
& Wellstation.
The horses heavy with sweat
Push on, ears pricked,
Certain,
No turning back.

Past her grave at Lutwyche,
His at Thanbyuzayat,
The Burma soil
Holding him close,
Past Derra land,
The house now ashes,
Just a rusty clothesline,
Where we threw flat stones
Across the face of time.
Axe heads lie forgotten
In Auburn River shades,
Borra rings so carelessly ploughed under.
A storm now descends on the barren earth
As the horses finally stand
Spent and snorting,
Through the lightning and the thunder,
And in that moment,
He is gone.

I am his son,
Forever
Riding,
Riding……
Over rough country.
